Not every homeowner has a garage to store needed equipment, such as gardening tools, lawn mowers, weed whackers, etc. Two options to consider storing these items are in your basement (if you have one) or in a back hall closet. However, neither of these are truly solutions. In both cases, you need to go into the house to retrieve needed items and in one case (basement) you need to travel down and up stairs, carrying your equipment in and out of the house every time you need to use it. If you don’t have a garage, what are your options to storing items needed to keep your home looking its best? Fortunately, there are a few lower cost options to keep your equipment safe from the weather and easily accessible.
First, weed items down to what you use often. If you haven’t touched that hoe in two years, sell it. For larger or lesser-used equipment (such as a grass seed spreader), borrow or rent it as needed.
Second, outsource grass cutting to a neighborhood teenager. Many high school and college students seek out ways to make money during the summer. Do your part and help them learn the value of work!
Third, invest in an outdoor storage shed. Large box stores, such as Lowe’s and Home Depot, sell reasonably priced storage sheds in various sizes and built with different products, such as wood (that requires maintenance) or maintenance free material.
Consider adding a carport. Check with your local area zoning board, first, before constructing a carport. Some regulations may not allow one to be added to your home. However, if you are able to construct a carport, you cannot only keep your car out of the weather, you will have storage space for your equipment as well.
Avoid storing off site. Off site storage facilities, even if you rent a small space, can be expensive. You are essentially paying for storing items that you might rarely use and it might be cheaper over the long run to borrow or rent equipment rather than store it.
Using these strategies, over time, will keep you equipment out of the weather, easily accessible, and will save you money.
