Did you ever walk into a bathroom and was amazed by its décor? Increasingly homeowner’s are remodeling their bathrooms based more on a theme or idea than just on paint and tile color. Gone are bathrooms painted in different shades of blue or green. Today’s bathrooms boast natural woods, eclectic décor, and styles that reflect the homeowner. So, where do find inspiration to remodel your bathroom to make it a room that is memorable? Below are a few ideas.
Spa: If you have ever been to a spa you may have noticed not only the colors (cool blues, purples, greens, and tans), but also the way the spa feels – very relaxing! This feeling is accomplished by the use of clear or colored glass, radiant heat flooring, large and multiple showerheads, and rich and luxurious towels.
Nature: If you are seeking to create a bathroom with an outdoorsy feel, take a walk in the woods. Envision a sink and bathtub each with a waterfall faucet. Bathrooms installed with natural woods and tile exudes a healthy lifestyle.
Hollywood Star: Depending upon your lifestyle and interests, remodeling your bathroom with glass, lights, and accessories that scream “bling” may be perfect for you! A mirror surrounded by bright make-up lights, a large soaking tub, even movie-themed wall paper – all would complete a bathroom made for an Oscar winning actor or actress.
Beachy: Bathrooms with a beach theme are highly desired. The sound of waves and the smell of the ocean take one to a calm, serene place. Sand tones, cool blues, and elements of the sea (think sea shells) can be combined with large, fluffy striped beach towels and soft area rugs.
Pick Your Theme
If none of the above appeal to you and you are still searching for inspiration, turn to the things you love. Music, art, sports, animals – each interest will have items you can add to any bathroom. Here are some examples:
- Musical: Find vinyl LPs of different sizes, adding them to the walls of your bathroom, grouping them by size or randomly. Black-and-white can be your color scheme, then, add pops of color such as bright pink. A piano or music note motif adds the perfect touch for a shower curtain.
- Art: Here the inspiration is endless. Visit your local art gallery for your inspiration. Draw from the various shapes, sizes, and colors from abstract art pieces. Glass artwork can be incorporated into bathroom lighting. Or, add pictures and items with representations of your favorite artist! You can also use actual tools used to paint and create art, such as paintbrushes, small paint cans, as well as picture frames – either framing art or simply the frame.
- Animals: A trip to a zoo or farm can be perfect places to gain inspiration for your bathroom design. Select one or more than one type of animal – horses, dogs, or cats – and decorate using items representing various breeds of each type. Or, select your favorite breed, such as the Arabian horse, and decorate accordingly.
- Sports: All you need to do to seek inspiration in this category is to select the sport or sports that you enjoy. Football, baseball, hockey, soccer, track-and-field, etc. Think outside of the box and select less well-known sports in some parts of the world such as bike racing, rugby, lacrosse, ice-skating – whatever sport you select, take items from that sport and add them into your design.
Your interests may be on the more eclectic or whimsical side – frogs that play guitars or old newspaper article wallpaper. You can use items that represent your interests to draw inspiration. Shop at antique stores and places that you would not normally visit. Look for unique, one-of-a-kind items. Then, decorate your bathroom around those treasures.
Don’t Overlook Color
Another way to gain inspiration and transform your bathroom into one of the most special rooms in your home is to draw from your favorite colors! Recreate your bathroom with the color palettes you love. Or, go bold and do your bathroom in one color! And don’t be afraid of painting various shapes on the walls. Think stripes, circles, squares, and ovals – fill them in our just outline the shape.
Size Doesn’t Matter
Wherever you find your inspiration, remember that you can take those insights and apply them to any size bathroom. Whether you are seeking to design a smaller powder room or a state-of-the-art master bathroom suite, you still can incorporate your favorite ideas into the décor. That’s the fun part! Smaller spaces enable you to add a few touches that reflect your style. With larger bathrooms (plus a larger budget) your dream bathroom can become a reality!
As you think about how you want your bathroom to look, consider different ways that you can use or re-use items that you like. For example, a ladder with wide rungs or a stepped bookshelf can be used to store big, fluffy towels. If your bathroom does not have a linen closet, consider re-purposing an older dresser with deep drawers. And don’t forget other types of furniture such as small stools, a side table, or a vanity chair. Are you interested in creating a Western theme? Use old horseshoes as towel and bathrobe hooks and re-invent an old harness yoke by inserting a mirror. Whether you really enjoy cars or your interests lie in surfboarding, regardless of your passions, you can work items and colors that represent each into the perfect bathroom.
Whatever you decide to use as inspiration, bathrooms that are unique will definitely be remembered!
