Fall Gardening Ideas

“When most people think of gardening, they think of spring & summer.  The fact is, fall can be a great time to work with your garden.”  Karen Johannsen of Johannsen’s Greenhouse & Gifts

Fall is Bulb season. Now is the time to plan and purchase your spring flowering bulbs. There is no hurry to plant, however, since you have until the ground freezes to get them planted.  This is the only time to plant if you want flowers early in spring. The work you do now will reap big rewards.

Karen’s suggestions for spring flowering bulbs include:

? Tulip
? Crocus
? Daffodil
? Lily
? Hyacinth

Another good gardening technique is to plant winter rye after you have cleaned up your garden in fall. The rye holds your soil in place, minimizes erosion and adds great organic matter. It’s a green technique, literally and figuratively.

Planting beds can be prepared for next spring with other types of organic matter as well.  Mixing in composted leaves, peat moss
and/or composted cow manure this fall will make for a great growing environment in the spring.

“You don’t have to go without green through the winter either,” says Johannsen.“There are a number of foliage plants which can thrive inside your home with the right light conditions.”  Below are a few of Karen’s suggestions for both high or low light  situations.

Plants that thrive in a HIGH LIGHT environment:

? Ficus/Fig
? Schefflera
? Yucca
? Cactus
? Jade
? Rubber Tree

Plants that thrive in a LOW TO MEDIUM LIGHT environment:

? Pothos
? Chinese Evergreen
? Sanservieria (Mother In Law Tongue)
? Dracaena
? ZZ Plant
? Philodendron
