A Family That Plays Together Stays Together

The old saying ‘A family that plays together stays together’ is an operating philosophy that many of our customers subscribe to,” says Diane Kopan, Co-owner of Sport Court of Madison.

“Often, the courts we install become a gathering place for the family,” adds Kopan.  “Whether it’s tennis, basketball, roller hockey, whatever, it becomes a focal point for the family.  And, in this day and age of children being scheduled into multiple activities, while the activities may be enriching at some levels, it can splinter a family’s time together.

“We have had parents tell us a park is only a block away, but they are very reluctant to let the kids go play by themselves,
unattended. The great thing about a court system in the back yard is that the kids can be outside playing and competing, while being supervised. It is a safe environment and one that gives the whole family peace of mind.”

Parents also have mentioned they like the control the situation gives them and kids love the variety – basketball, tennis (regulation and short court), volleyball, roller hockey, shuffle board, hopscotch, four-square and a myriad of other games for kids of all ages. In the winter, the surface can even be flooded and frozen for a skating rink. (Parents even are developing their own competitions, with the kids and for themselves. (It’s fun to see).

Younger/growing families are popular consumers of court systems; however there are other situations where the trend is growing, according to Kopan. Two career families with teenagers at home appreciate the courts through the summer months. Having their home as the gathering point for teenagers is a preferred option to not always knowing where the teenager and their friends are.

Empty Nesters and Retired Households

“We have more mature couples who have installed courts for their grandchildren and for their own uses. One client installed a stone patio and food preparation station adjacent to their tennis court and hosts a weekly group that meets for cards, food and round robin tennis. It’s fun for everyone, and is a vigorous activity.”  “They have even mentioned the court is much cooler to play on than traditional asphalt tennis courts and is much easier on their joints and back.  They love the  maintenance free quality of their court, saying they get a great deal more use out of it than a pool they had in the past, ”Kopan says.  “Of course, the court systems are not for everyone, but if a family is an active one and enjoys each other’s company, we feel the court system approach to home improvement is a great option to consider because it creates an entirely different, wholesome way in which a family can spend their time together.  We wouldn’t have it any other way,” smiled Kopan.

Outdoor activities allow families to play and stay together.  Tennis, basketball, volleyball badminton, shuffleboard, and other outdoor games can be included on the playing surface, giving kids, friends and entire families many activities to choose from.
