When A Backyard Court System May Make Great Sense

In tough economic times, a backyard court system may make great sense. As everyone tries to cut back on expenses these days, investing in a backyard court system makes perfect sense by offering household budget reduction opportunities that will help pay for the court in the long term.”  Diane Kopan, Co-Owner, Sport Court of Madison

Having Your Family Close

There is an old saying: “A family that plays together stays together.” This is an operating philosophy that many of our customers subscribe to. “Often, the courts we install become a gathering place for the family,” adds Kopan. “Whether it’s tennis, basketball, roller hockey, or whatever, it becomes a focal point for the family. And, in this day and age of children being scheduled into multiple activities, while the activities may be enriching at some levels, it can splinter a family’s time together. Even though there is a park is only a block away, parents they are very reluctant to let the kids go play by themselves, unattended. The great thing about a court system in the back yard is that the kids can be outside playing and competing, while parents can keep a close eye on them without leaving the house. It is a safe environment and one that gives the whole family peace of mind.

Parents also have mentioned they like the control the situation give  them and kids love the variety — basketball, tennis (regulation and short court), volleyball, roller hockey, shuffle board, hopscotch, four-square and a myriad of other games for kids of all ages. In the winter, the surface can even be flooded and frozen for a skating rink.

Younger/growing families are popular consumers of court systems; however there are other situations where the trend is growing. Two career families with teenagers at home appreciate the courts through the summer months.  Having their home as the gathering point for teenagers is a preferred option to not always knowing where the teenager and their friends are.

Changing Needs: Households Without Children

More mature couples have installed courts for their grandchildren and for their own uses. One client installed a stone patio and food preparation station adjacent to their tennis court. They host a weekly group that meets for cards, food and round robin tennis. It’s fun for everyone, and is a healthy, vigorous activity.

Clients have even mentioned the court is actually much cooler to play on than the traditional asphalt tennis courts, not to mention it is much easier on their joints and back. Everyone loves the maintenance free quality of the courts, saying they get a great deal more use out of it than a pool they had in the past. Of course, these court systems are not for everyone, but if a family is an active one and enjoys each other’s company, the court system approach to home improvement is a great option because it creates an entirely different, wholesome way in which a family can spend their time together.  “And we are very proud to say that we wouldn’t have it any other way,” smiled Kopan.

Some of the benefits of backyard courts include…

  • Fewer trips to parks or gyms, meaning a savings on fuel
  • Reduced monthly membership fees for indoor gyms, health clubs or other practice facilities
  • More family time for enjoyment and growth
