Universal Design: Kitchen Considerations

Built-in oven allows for easier access and large drawers allow for better access than doors.

“Kitchens are a hub of a family’s life.  Meals are prepared and eaten there, guests visit and in general, it’s the crossroad of many family activities,” says Mike Juers of Paul Davis Restoration and Remodeling.

“Because of the central role they play in everyone’s life, having a universally designed kitchen allows grandparents to get more from their visits, and those who are aging in their own homes to be self-sufficient longer. Since the vast majority of people want to stay in their homes, universal design provides the tools they need to maintain their homes.

Questions To Ask About Your Kitchen Layout

Of course, having a functional kitchen is an important step in attaining that goal.  To begin understanding how your kitchen rates, answer the following questions…

1. Is there good lighting over the sink, stove & countertop work areas?
2. Area cabinets and cupboards easy to open?
3. Is a fire extinguisher within easy reach?
4. Do you have a sturdy step stool with handles?
5. Are objects on shelves or in drawers easily accessible?
6. Does the sink faucet have an anti-scald device?
7. Are countertops easy to use when seated?

Simple No/Low Cost Kitchen Modifications

If remodeling is not an option in the near future, consider the following adjustments to make your kitchen more universal in nature.

1. Install additional task lighting
2. Install larger cabinet door handles for easier grip
3. Place an A-B-C rated fire extinguisher within easy reach of stove
4. Install roll-out shelving/drawers, trays and lazy susans for better access
5. Install lever handle faucets with built-in anti-scald protection
6. Install GFCI outlets
