Focus On Stained Glass: Fused Glass Tiles

If you are remodeling a room in your home or building a new home, you may want to consider accenting with fused glass tiles. Used in conjunction with either glass tile or ceramic tile, fused glass can create a focal point that ties all the design elements of that special room together. The extensive palate of colors available is a designer’s delight.

Fused glass is any type of glass that is melted together in a kiln.  The parts or pieces can be most any shape.  One can use a glass cutter to cut specific shapes or use pre made stringers, noodles, frits or flakes to create that perfect design.  The parts and pieces are composed on a base piece of glass and then fired in a kiln.  The glass begins to melt together between 1325° to 1480°.  The results are incredible and often times unpredictable.  From geometric patterns to almost paint like quality, one is only limited by his imagination.  If you have tile as a backsplash in your kitchen an occasional fused glass tile can highlight a color you want to accent throughout the kitchen.

If the look in your kitchen has a metallic finish such as copper, bronze or brushed nickel, fused glass is available in a variety of iridized surfaces that compliment the earthy look of the metal tones.

Fused glass tiles can be either very opaque or lightly tinted transparent glass. If you choose a commercial glass tile you can add that extra element with a complimentary fused glass tile with the same transparent look.  Bathrooms, kitchens, fireplace areas or wet bars are all appropriate for fused glass tiles because fused glass is very versatile in both color and texture.
