Updating your home can enliven your whole outlook on life. As the interior designer and owner of ColorScapes Interiors, my clients call on me for color and design assistance to move their dreams forward. Every homeowner’s design needs are different, but it may be helpful to identify what stage your home is in and how far you want to take the update. Do your home design needs fit one of these stages of updating?
STAGE 1. FINISHING TOUCHES - UPDATING NEW (or relatively new) HOMES:
Are you building or have you moved into a home that was constructed in the last 10 years or so? Your updating may involve simple changes such as adding color, cabinet handles, and personal touches with art and accessories. Color is the most common way to begin this stage. Many homes are not painted at all at the time of construction, but simply sprayed with a texture finish coat. This finish does not wear well, but gives homeowners time to get settled before making the decision to choose their color scheme and paint. Most people agree a house does not feel like a home until color is applied to bring out the natural angles and to support art work and decor.
STAGE 2. MODEST, BUT SIGNIFICANT CHANGES:
Sometimes it’s just time to say goodbye to the old yellow vinyl flooring or the Berber carpet (hopefully the shag was long forgotten) and enter the new millennium. Modest changes may mean updating carpet and other flooring, interior doors and handles, light fixtures, countertops and paint colors. My clients inform me that getting assistance from the start with planning, budgeting and creating a vision made a potentially stressful remodel fun. STAGE 3. MAJOR RENOVATION:
Sometimes it’s time to modify the bones of a house. Often times a kitchen remodel spills into replacement of a living room carpet or the need to paint the adjoining rooms. I recommend calling early in the design stages to create a step-by-step plan where I can assist with management of the various projects through to completion making your next update stress-free.
